I like both the original Clank and the spin-off Clank! In! Space!. I own Space while Pieter owns the OG. Here's what's great about both of them:
- The combination of deck building and map traversing. It's really well done.
- Indirect player interaction. You can't really screw someone over, but by pissing off the villain you create urgency for everyone.
- No need for any big decisions early on, your build will gradually come.
- Cool stories always seem to unfold.
- MonkeyBot. Especially in the OG game we thought it was hilarious.
Improvements in Space
- The modular board is really well done.
- Escape pods! I love how they're limited, taking the easy one forces others to go for the harder to reach ones. And in some circumstances you can even get an opponent perma-stuck which is amazing. I almost successfully did it against Marius:
He (purple) was ahead of me (orange) and there was a 'security zone', stopping your movement so normally Marius would be first.
But I had this security cart, allowing me to bypass that. Unfortunately I died just before that could happen but it was amazing.
Differences with base Clank!
- The main difference is play time. Clank takes an hour, Space can take up to two.
- Space is a little harder to teach because it introduces some new concepts, but still easily teachable people who haven't played the OG.
- I like OG Clank's theme a little better, but I appreciate the nods in Space to the OG (goblin becomes G0B-L1N)
- Some cards belong to factions. I think I'm pretty neutral to them.
I first played base Clank in the Dondersteen's garden in Hengelo. It was a really nice experience! They had the game in their playable collection but none in stock for sale, which was a little sad. So Pieter bought it at Comicasa.
The game is weirdly expensive though at around 70 euros. Especially the base game doesn't come with any premium feeling components that justify the price.
